How long will the semiconductor price hike last?
Research cutoff: 2026-10-12, Japan time.
Scope: Memory chips and foundry manufacturing prices, with implications for computers and other devices. All dates below are publication dates unless explicitly identified as factory milestones. Forecasts are distinguished from observed results and from this report's own analysis.
1. The most defensible answer
For DRAM, plan for expensive conditions through most of 2027. The earliest credible window for meaningful price relief is late 2027 to the first half of 2028, but continuing supply constraints through 2028 remain a serious alternative. Gartner's October forecast anticipates relief in that window; Micron's September outlook still expects constrained supply in both 2027 and 2028. Neither establishes a guaranteed end date. (Gartner, 2026-10-02; Micron, 2026-09-30)
Consumer NAND storage could ease earlier, particularly in the second half of 2027. TrendForce expects a looser NAND supply environment then, while its more recent September analysis distinguishes weak consumer storage from strong enterprise solid-state drive demand. This is a possibility for consumer SSDs, rather than a forecast that every NAND product will become cheaper together. (TrendForce, 2026-07-30; TrendForce, 2026-09-16)
Some non-memory chips face price pressure into 2027 too. TrendForce forecasts further mature-node foundry increases, and its October update still describes tight 8-inch capacity. These are manufacturing-service prices, not an identical percentage increase in every finished processor or electronic device. (TrendForce, 2026-06-30; TrendForce, 2026-10-05)
My synthesis: From October 2026, the evidence supports roughly another year or more of substantial memory-cost pressure. For DRAM, late 2027 to 2028 is the useful planning range for possible relief. Full normalization and a return to previous price levels are separate questions with weaker evidence.
2. What “the hike ending” actually means
Analysis: A price peak can precede the end of a shortage. Buyers can reduce capacity per device, postpone purchases or use inventories before new factories reach full output. The forecasts below therefore cannot be reduced to one universal date.
3. What the current evidence says
Interpretation: The immediate evidence points to slower increases in some segments, with continuing increases elsewhere. It does not support a broad near-term price collapse.
These percentages describe particular contract markets. They are not retail-price forecasts for a named RAM kit or laptop. A quarterly price increase also must not be extrapolated mechanically into every quarter of 2027.
4. Credible future estimates, including the disagreement
HBM means high-bandwidth memory, used with AI accelerators. NAND denotes the flash-memory architecture, rather than a general category of RAM.
Important: The 121% HBM estimate does not mean ordinary PC RAM will double in 2027, or that an unchanged HBM product rises by exactly that percentage.
5. Why the squeeze can last this long
Capacity announcements arrive before usable volume
Micron says new fabrication facilities take a few quarters after initial output to make more meaningful production contributions. Analysis: New 2027 capacity therefore helps explain why 2028 is a credible relief period, without proving that demand will stop outrunning output then. (Micron, 2026-09-30)
The relevant constraint is the product mix
PC DRAM allocations could shrink in 2027 as producers redirect capacity toward servers. Client SSD buyers, by contrast, have inventories and are reducing drive capacities to contain costs. Analysis: Weak PC demand alone cannot guarantee cheaper RAM when its allocated supply is also falling. (TrendForce, 2026-09-30)
Legacy chips are not automatically the first to recover. September specialty-DRAM research describes mature-product output contracting faster than supplementary supply can replace it. Analysis: A DDR4-dependent purchase deserves a separate check from a DDR5 purchase. (TrendForce, 2026-09-30)
Spending growth does not equal physical demand growth
TrendForce projects cloud-service-provider capital expenditure rising another 50% in 2027, but explicitly attributes part of the increase to memory inflation. Analysis: Treating that entire spending increase as additional chip units would overstate the physical demand signal. Track server shipments and memory capacity per system alongside spending. (TrendForce, 2026-08-25)
6. Why an earlier reversal is still plausible
IDC forecasts smartphone shipments falling 16.7% in 2026. This establishes weakening device demand, although it does not establish an equivalent fall in total memory demand, because servers and memory content per device also matter. (IDC, 2026-08-26)
TrendForce's September NAND assessment identifies Chinese capacity expansion and lower production costs as pressure on consumer storage. Its July outlook also warns that rising memory spending could affect cloud providers' investment and procurement plans. These are concrete mechanisms for weakening price momentum. (TrendForce, 2026-09-16; TrendForce, 2026-07-30)
Analysis: Prices depend on what buyers will pay for the next available supply, not solely on whether every customer receives its requested allocation. Lower procurement, inventory releases or reduced memory specifications could therefore produce price relief before shortages disappear. This makes Gartner's forecast economically possible; it does not validate its exact timing.
For HBM, vendors are already evaluating smaller memory configurations to contain system costs. TrendForce still expects overall HBM pricing to rise, showing that specification cuts can soften total purchase costs without eliminating price pressure per unit of memory. (TrendForce, 2026-09-29)
7. A practical forecast by segment
The judgments below are this report's synthesis. “Confidence” describes relative evidence strength, not a calibrated probability.
Scenario framework: Use a staged recovery as the central planning case: consumer storage first, broader DRAM relief later. Also keep a persistent-tightness case through 2028 and an earlier-downturn case if AI procurement weakens abruptly. The public evidence does not justify precise probabilities for these scenarios.
8. What would make me change the forecast?
This is a monitoring framework, not a claim that these developments have occurred.
For a work-computer purchase, a reasonable approach is to compare the cost of today's upgrade with the value of waiting. Do not make a necessary productivity upgrade depend on an assumed sharp DRAM price fall within six to twelve months. For an optional upgrade, comparing actual offers over time preserves flexibility.
9. Evidence quality and limits
- Best evidence for production schedules: Manufacturer announcements. They verify planned milestones, not completion or full utilization.
- Best public evidence for market pricing: Dated research from firms tracking contracts and supply chains.
- Supplier forecasts: Useful because suppliers observe bookings and production directly, but their portfolios and commercial interests can influence their outlook.
- Independent forecasts: Gartner and IDC offer a counterweight, but their published views genuinely disagree.
- Access: Gartner's October conclusion was available in its indexed public summary. Several TrendForce details came from public report abstracts and tables of contents. Full paid models were not accessed.
- Forecast accuracy: No comparable historical error series was available to rank these forecasts by measured accuracy. Precision of the stated dates is not proof of predictive accuracy.
- Coverage: This is not a complete forecast for every semiconductor category. Individual processors, graphics cards and finished devices also reflect product launches, contracts, margins and exchange rates.
- Date discipline: Calendar periods are used for the forecast windows. Micron's fiscal-year labels are not substituted for calendar dates.
The evidence supports a forecast range and conditional decisions. It does not support a certain month when the entire semiconductor price hike ends.
